jane@portfolio.comKettleSpace is a startup that offers co-working spaces at convenient locations in New York. I interned there during the summer of 2019 as a product designer. My time at KettleSpace was spent focusing on four major projects listed below. Click on each to learn more.
My goal with this project was to create an onboarding experience for users to go through so that they felt welcomed, and left with a better understanding of the value that KettleSpace was providing them. Currently they offer a sign up screen which is very text heavy.
I began by doing a competitive analysis with onboarding processes by other companies. This included companies such as WeWork, Spacious, JLabs and ApartmentList. Through this I identified some design patterns among all of them, as well as some dark patterns that we needed to avoid. For example, forcing users to give up their personal information after putting them through a long onboarding quiz in order for them to get the answers.
I came out of this process with three main takeaways:
From here, the next step was for me to conduct user interviews with current members, both at KettleSpace and at other co-working spaces. I conducted 8 user interviews in total, including with some community managers within the company.
"I like KettleSpace because it lets me explore bars and restaurants in the city."
"The productive coffee shop vibe really works for me."
"It is difficult to establish a collaborative creative environment if everyone is required to stay quiet."
"I chose another co-working space because it gave me the opportunity to receive mentorship."
These are some of the quotes that stood out during the interview process. These among others led me to believe the biggest feature that users would want to extract from their onboarding process is which one of the KettleSpace locations would be ideal for them.

With these requirements in mind, I began designing the onboarding pages in Figma. Below is the final design put together using stock images. I put together these questions in order to give the user a sense that KettleSpace was personalized for them, and they could easily find their perfect fit.
With this project, we wanted to offer users more control over their accounts. Since KettleSpace offers two tiers of memberships, we wanted users to be able to easily switch back and forth between them if they wanted.
The existing framework allowed very minimal control over users' plans, payments, history, etc. So I designed a new workflow to incorporate these elements, shown in this video:
When I started at KettleSpace, one of the first things I noticed was that the emails I received with my free trial were very long and verbose, to the point that I took one look at the font size and decided to read it later (meaning I did not come back to it).
So I began some research into what constitutes a good marketing email. My key takeaways from this were:
Following these guidelines, I created the above wireframe options. After testing these with users, I finalized the below design in Figma, and using HubSpot was able to integrate them into the company's regular workflow.
